A long weekend in Inverloch

Inverloch is close to our home so it feels weird to write about it as a travel destination. It is usually a place we visit regularly for a drive, shop or just to hang out at the beach. Lockdown, and my sons work commitments saw us looking for a break closer to home. Since the weather was going to be lovely, Inverloch was an obvious choice. So when we booked to stay over Easter, I decided to write about our adventure from the perspective of a tourist.

Inverloch is a coastal town situated on the Bass Coast, approx. 145kms south east of Melbourne. As the town sits on an inlet it gives visitors the opportunity have the calm waters of the inlet or the surf of the ocean. The beach is the main attraction and is beautifully long and changes constantly with the tides. You can walk for miles along the beach and admire the changing landscape. From the beautiful calm waters of the inlet to the sheer cliffs of the Bunurong Marine Park a walk along the beach is a must.

We stayed at the Inverloch Foreshore Campground which is located on the inlet side of Inverloch. We had borrowed a friends paddle boards so the spot was perfectly located on the calm waters. We were certainly not the only ones out on the water during the weekend. There were many families enjoying that last of the warm weather. The paddle boarding was interesting – not sure I mastered it – but had heaps of fun trying. The park is about a 15 – 20 min walk into town, but there is a great path right along the beach so it was a beautiful, easy walk or ride. Other activities that are not beach related include par 3 golf, art galleries and dinosaur tours.

The town itself has many speciality shops and all the usual facilities of a small tourist town. There are plenty of places to eat and drink including 2 pubs, pizza, fish and chips, Japanese and the usual ice cream parlours. We managed to try lots of the eateries and enjoyed the coffee at The Local, the Japanese at Tomo’s and a few drinks at The Inlet.

Inverloch is at the start of the Bunurong Marine National park. The drive between Inverloch and Cape Paterson, along the coast is a great way to explore the changing landscape and get some amazing photos. If you enjoy hiking the Townsend Bluff walk is great also. There is plenty of nature to keep you occupied in Inverloch and if the weather is not favourable for the beach there is lots to explore in town or along the coast. Well worth visiting whether it be a day trip or a week long break.

Have you visited Inverloch before?
