The Ultimate Guide to the Bunurong Marine Park

The Bunurong Marine Park is a stretch of coastline that runs from Inverloch to Harmers Haven in South Gippsland. This area of coast has a ruggedness about it. The sheer cliffs that drop away to beautiful beaches is pristine. I was there on a warm autumn day and had some of the beaches to myself. There is something to be said for being the only person on the beach. Almost like you’re a trespasser on mother natures quiet time.

The best way to explore this area is by car. The road meanders along the coast from Inverloch to Cape Paterson with a number of areas to pull off and explore. The beaches and clifftop lookouts are worth stopping for. Each area is different from the first, with different views of the magnificent rock walls and coastline. After you leave Cape Paterson the road heads inland towards Wonthaggi. You can then head back to the coast at Harmers Haven for more exploring.

Activities

Flat rocks and the Caves are the best areas for snorkeling. There are 87 species of fish, starfish, snails, seals and whales that call this area home. Rock fishing is also popular in this area. Boat’s can be launched from Inverloch at Andersons Inlet. You can also hire stand up paddle boards and kayaks in Inverloch. The Bunurong coast is very popular with surfers. A number of the beach spots along the coast can be busy with surfboards when the waves are big. A couple of things to be careful of are the waves and the tides. In some areas the waves can be high and hit the rocks with a force that could cause harm, especially to small children. Also be mindful of the tides, areas of rocks that were exposed can get completely covered during high tide. You do not want to find yourself stuck due to your path back now being under water. There are also strong rips and currents along this stretch of coast. If you are not a strong swimmer then the inlet side of Inverloch is the best place to swim. This areas is more protected and shallow enough for small children to enjoy the water.

The Bunurong Marine Coast has long stretches of beach for walking. It is a popular activity for the locals to just wander along the beautiful shores and watch the birds and fisherman. Even on cooler days this area is worth visiting. The 145 km drive from Melbourne makes this area an easy day trip. There is something to be said for getting back to nature and this area will not disappoint.
